Energy Management System
Certification
ISO 50001 is the international standard for Energy Management Systems — providing a structured framework to improve energy performance, reduce consumption, cut energy costs and demonstrate commitment to carbon reduction and climate goals.
What is ISO 50001?
ISO 50001 is the internationally recognised standard specifying requirements for an Energy Management System (EnMS). It provides a systematic framework for organisations to establish, implement, maintain and improve energy performance — reducing energy consumption, cutting energy costs and decreasing the environmental footprint of energy use.
A defining feature of ISO 50001 is the concept of Energy Performance Improvement (EnPI): organisations must identify their Significant Energy Uses (SEUs) — the major consumers of energy in their operations — and demonstrate measurable improvement in energy performance against a defined Energy Baseline over the certification cycle.
ISO 50001 introduced the concept of Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs) — quantitative measures of energy performance such as kWh per unit of production, per degree-day or per square metre — and requires organisations to normalise energy data against relevant variables to demonstrate genuine performance improvement rather than reductions due to reduced activity.
The 2018 edition aligned with the High-Level Structure (HLS), making it straightforward to integrate with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. For UK organisations, ISO 50001 certification is recognised under the ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) and supports reporting under Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR).
Identify Significant Energy Uses (SEUs), establish baselines and EnPIs, and demonstrate measurable improvement in energy performance over time.
Collect and analyse energy data, establish energy baselines and set improvement objectives aligned with the organisation's strategic goals.
Identify and prioritise the activities, equipment and processes that account for the most energy consumption — and focus improvement efforts accordingly.
ISO 50001 certification is accepted as compliance evidence under the UK Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and supports SECR obligations.
Fully aligned with ISO HLS — integrate the EnMS with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and other standards in a single management system.
Benefits of ISO 50001 Certification
Third-party certification by RBA Registrars provides independent, credible verification that your management system meets international requirements.
Systematic measurement and management of energy consumption identifies inefficiencies and drives measurable reductions in energy bills.
Lower energy consumption directly reduces Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions — supporting net zero and carbon reduction commitments.
ISO 50001 certification covering all of an organisation's energy consumption is accepted by the Environment Agency as meeting ESOS Phase compliance obligations.
An EnMS provides the energy data collection and analysis infrastructure required for accurate Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) disclosures.
Energy management certification demonstrates commitment to sustainability — supporting ESG scoring, net zero supply chain requirements and public sector tender criteria.
Energy management often reveals wider operational efficiencies — in maintenance, production scheduling, equipment management and facilities.
Certification contributes to achieving multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), supporting your organisation's sustainability commitments and ESG reporting.

RBA Registrars provides ISO 50001 certification services to organisations across the UK, Bangladesh, Asia and internationally — delivered by practising auditors with genuine sector competence and understanding of local and regional regulatory frameworks.
Our auditors are assessed for technical competence across specific NACE/EA sector codes prior to assignment, ensuring that every audit is conducted by someone who understands the management system requirements relevant to your industry.
Whether your organisation is implementing a system for the first time or transferring your existing ISO 50001 certificate from another body, RBA Registrars offers a clear, transparent and professionally conducted certification pathway.
All auditors assessed for NACE/EA sector knowledge before assignment.
Local knowledge, internationally recognised certification processes.
Impartial, consistent and integrity-driven certification operations.
Transfer your existing certificate to RBA Registrars via a streamlined process.
RBA Registrars can support your staff training alongside certification.
Implementing Your Management System
ISO 50001 follows the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) cycle. The eight stages below map the standard's clauses to a logical implementation sequence.
Define the EnMS scope and boundaries, understand the organisation's energy profile, context and interested parties' requirements. (Cl. 4)
Top management commits, establishes the Energy Policy and appoints an Energy Management Representative with the authority and resources to drive improvement. (Cl. 5)
Collect and analyse energy data. Identify SEUs. Establish baselines and EnPIs. Set objectives and targets with improvement action plans. (Cl. 6)
Provide resources — metering infrastructure, energy management software. Establish competence for SEU operators. Define communication and documentation. (Cl. 7)
Implement operational controls for SEUs — operating instructions, setpoints, maintenance procedures. Apply energy efficiency criteria to procurement. (Cl. 8)
Monitor EnPIs and energy baselines. Analyse energy data for trends and anomalies. Evaluate whether energy performance improvement objectives are being met. (Cl. 9)
Audit EnMS conformity and energy data accuracy. Raise nonconformities. Implement and verify corrective actions. (Cl. 9.2)
Top management reviews EnPI trends and objectives progress. Makes decisions on resources, new targets and improvement priorities. (Cl. 9.3, 10)
ISO 50001 Certification Process
RBA Registrars's certification pathway is transparent, structured and aligned with ISO/IEC 17021-1 — from initial enquiry through to certificate issue and ongoing surveillance.
Contact RBA Registrars to discuss your organisation's activities, the proposed ISO 50001 scope, number of sites and relevant NACE/EA sector codes. We confirm auditor competence for your sector and issue a tailored, no-obligation quotation.
Complete the RBA Registrars Application for Systems Certification and sign the Certification Agreement setting out the audit programme, fees, surveillance schedule, certification mark rights, confidentiality and rights of appeal.
An RBA Registrars auditor reviews your ISO 50001 management system documentation to assess readiness for the Stage 2 implementation audit. The Stage 1 report identifies any significant gaps to address before Stage 2 proceeds.
A comprehensive on-site or remote audit assessing the full implementation and effectiveness of the management system against all normative clauses of ISO 50001. Nonconformities must be closed before certification is granted.
An independent technical reviewer — not involved in either audit — reviews the complete audit file and makes the certification decision. On approval, RBA Registrars issues a ISO 50001 certificate valid for three years.
At least one surveillance audit per calendar year verifies continued conformity with ISO 50001, monitors system performance and checks progress on objectives and corrective actions.
Before certificate expiry, RBA Registrars conducts a full recertification audit. On successful completion, the certificate is renewed for a further three-year cycle.
The RBA Registrars Certification Mark
Once certified to ISO 50001, RBA Registrars will issue your certificate and authorise use of the RBA Registrars certification mark on tenders, annual reports, sustainability disclosures, website and marketing materials. The mark demonstrates to clients, regulators and stakeholders that your energy management system has been independently certified to the international standard.

ISO 50001 replaced ISO 50001:2011. All certificates should reference the 2018 edition. A key terminology change from the 2011 edition is the use of 'implementation of actions for energy performance improvement' rather than 'energy performance achievement'. RBA Registrars issues certificates to ISO 50001. Contact us if you require a transition from the 2011 edition.
