ISO 14024:2018
Environmental labels and declarations — Type I environmental labelling. Principles and procedures for the development, operation and certification of eco-labelling programmes.
What is ISO 14024?
ISO 14024 establishes the principles and procedures for the development of Type I environmental labelling programmes, including the selection of product categories, product environmental criteria and product function characteristics. It also establishes the certification procedures for awarding the label.
Type I eco-labels are voluntary, multi-criteria-based, third-party programmes that award a licence authorising the use of environmental labels on products. These labels indicate overall environmental preferability of a product within a particular product category based on life cycle considerations.
Unlike self-declared environmental claims (Type II, ISO 14021), Type I labels require independent third-party verification against published criteria, providing consumers, procurers and markets with credible assurance of environmental performance.
Criteria consider environmental impacts across the entire product life cycle.
Independent certification — not self-declared — providing market credibility.
Assessment across multiple environmental aspects, not just a single attribute.
Widely recognised by consumers, procurement bodies and regulators.
Product criteria are periodically reviewed and updated to reflect best practice.
ISO 14024 Structure
The standard covers principles for eco-label programme development, criteria setting and certification procedures.
Key Benefits
Environmental Credibility
Type I labels provide the highest level of credible, independent environmental product assurance recognised by international frameworks.
Green Procurement
Many public and private procurement policies give preference to Type I eco-labelled products, opening access to sustainable procurement markets.
Market Differentiation
Stand out in competitive markets by demonstrating independently verified environmental performance to environmentally conscious consumers.
International Recognition
Type I eco-labels are part of the ISO 14020 family and are recognised under the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) mutual recognition framework.
Regulatory Support
Supports compliance with green claims regulations and avoids greenwashing allegations through independent, criteria-based certification.
Continual Improvement
Working towards eco-label criteria drives product design improvements and more sustainable manufacturing processes.
Contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals
Certification contributes to achieving multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), supporting your organisation's sustainability commitments and ESG reporting.
Who Should Certify?
Type I eco-labelling applies to products and services across all sectors where environmental criteria can be established for a defined product category.
Certification Process
Our process is structured, transparent and aligned with international requirements.
Submit your application with details about your organisation, scope, sites and personnel. RBA Registrars reviews and provides a formal proposal.
We confirm the scope, calculate audit duration per accreditation requirements, and issue a certification agreement.
Initial assessment of documentation, readiness and identification of areas of concern.
Thorough on-site assessment of implementation and effectiveness. Nonconformities documented for resolution.
Address findings within the agreed timeframe. Submit objective evidence of corrective actions.
Independent Certification Decision Maker reviews evidence to grant or withhold certification.
Annual surveillance audits maintain certification. Full recertification before the 3-year expiry.
