What is ISO 14024?

ISO 14024 establishes the principles and procedures for the development of Type I environmental labelling programmes, including the selection of product categories, product environmental criteria and product function characteristics. It also establishes the certification procedures for awarding the label.

Type I eco-labels are voluntary, multi-criteria-based, third-party programmes that award a licence authorising the use of environmental labels on products. These labels indicate overall environmental preferability of a product within a particular product category based on life cycle considerations.

Unlike self-declared environmental claims (Type II, ISO 14021), Type I labels require independent third-party verification against published criteria, providing consumers, procurers and markets with credible assurance of environmental performance.
